In celebration of this new product and its recent launch, we thought we would take you through the product design journey of developing this product.

Meet the minds behind our products

Our products department is always working diligently to ensure that we can continue to live out our philosophy of ‘Beautiful Designs Made Buildable’ by ensuring we can build designs with our products. The department includes David and Brad and is small, but very nimble! Creating new products that architects and designers want is their forte.

The end result of Click-on Screens offers no visible fixings to provide a clean, linear, 360-degree screen product, unmatched elsewhere within the market. It has a versatile Click-on connection system with fixings on the back or ends of battens. This maximises the range of potential applications and allows designers to place connections where they are least visible.

Product development is approached with an agile process refined over time. For Click-on Screens, 467 different drawings and sketches were saved throughout the process and reiterated until a product was created that met the needs of the customer.

We realised we needed Click-on Screens when architects kept requiring Click-on Battens to merge into a fall protection element (balustrade) within their designs. A big project with an atrium that we wanted to be specified on was the catalyst to getting this product into creation. Since then the demand for this product has only grown stronger.

10 steps of the product design journey

  1. Once there was a solid potential for demand for Click-on Screens, the process starts with an Engineering Verification (EV) consult with an engineer to scope out the performance requirements of the product.
  2. Customer research is conducted with early interviews with architects helped inform how this type of product is typically used. This helped refine the design and hypothesis.
  3. Product positioning was devised for the product and the two main competencies that it serves, being a screen and balustrade.
  4. Next was designing Click-on Screens around our guiding design principles of ‘Click-on’, stick-built, easy install and allowance for “fudge factor”. The design involved a lot of iterating and assessment of the product’s capabilities to meet the force requirements of a balustrade. A big aspect of this process is also considering how the product will be manufactured and if there are any limitations.
  5. The patent application beings once there is a clear direction in the design and once this is locked in, prototypes are made and in-house testing begins, resulting in more iterations in the material and geometry of the design.
  6. A design verification stage is entered and installers and interior designers are engaged with for a cycle of feedback and iterations, refining the product to a minimum marketable product.
  7. Early project specifications for the Click-on Screens validated that we had hit a sweet spot with the design.
  8. Third-party testing takes place, consisting of defining the product’s performance and the design of interfaces are locked in, called design freeze.
  9. Process Verification and we develop the methods to manufacture the product with our operations department through trials and modifications.
  10. The Product launch happens soon after, so we develop supporting documents for quoting, estimating and marketing. Including technical datasheets, installation manuals and renders.

Then we wait in anticipation to launch the product and see how our product is received by our valued customers.

What fuels your passion for product design?

We launched Click-on Screens directly in response to a strong need rather than in response to an existing product category, so in that way, it’s quite unique.

We enter product design with people in mind. Our customers are at the heart of our products and we design hoping that our customers will be excited and delighted with the finished product when they’re launched.

What did you anticipate the most when launching COS?

No one else has a Click-on connection within a screen product like we do, it’s unmatched within the market. Since it fills such a big gap and there aren’t any direct competitors, one thing I anticipated most when releasing Click-on Screens is the range of design concepts that we’d see from our clients. Our products get utilised in all sorts of different ways and we discover capabilities and uses that we hadn’t thought of yet.

When those first renders come back from designers – that’s the exciting bit! We wait in anticipation until the project is completed and when we see those final project photos, we really get a kick and it puts everything we work to achieve into a tangible feeling of pride and joy.

What’s next once this product is released?

I enjoy seeing our products evolve over time once they are released. With Click-on Screens I can envision new profiles that the battens and blades could be shaped into, and a range of configurations and orientations could also evolve. The possibilities are limitless when it comes to making beautiful designs buildable.

As we respond to an architectural need with our products, I am going to enjoy overseeing the response and seeing where Click-on Screens take us next. As proved by our Click-on Batten products 10 years ago when they were first released, the range has adapted immensely.

Screens: A Rising Architectural Trend

The finished product

Simplicity and clean linear textures are at the heart of Click-on Screens, our latest patented barrier system designed with our signature Click-on connection. Its strong engineering allows large batten spans between fixings which can also be invisible for a 360-degree clean, unhindered design.

Applications

Spatial architecture is easily achieved with Click-on Screens. Their flexible design, invisible fixings and strong joins enable you to design impressive multi-functional spaces.

They’re excellent as balustrade infills, fulfilling the need to make barrier systems beautiful. They’ve been engineered to meet high load requirements and comply with C3 and C5 balustrade infill ratings according to AS1170.1.

Click-on Screens can be used for a range of applications:

Components

The system consists of mounting tracks, clips and timber or aluminium battens. The clip base comes factory fitted to the mounting track at the specified spacing. A button is fixed to the back of the batten, which when slid up or down, clicks securely into engagement in the clip base.

Flexibility

Site variation along with building and thermal movement is all factored in with the top bracket getting fixed and the lower brackets being able to slide. The rail design makes for easy fixing to any substrate while giving the installer up to 10mm of in/out adjustment.
