The Art of Architectural Curves

Curved timber walls and ceilings are a design choice you simply can’t go wrong with, as they transform interiors into works of art. Using steam-bending techniques and our award-winning Click-on Batten system, we bring fluid, organic forms to life, enhancing both aesthetics and acoustics.

For any designer or builder, achieving a curved timber ceiling or wall can be a difficult task. With the right solutions, you can trust us to help you throughout the process.

No curve or twist is out of our capabilities, as our manufacturing processes are second to none.

How do we Curve our Timber?

Our expert team uses steam bending and kerfing to curve solid timber battens without compromising strength or quality. These techniques preserve the wood's natural grain while allowing smooth, flowing forms to emerge across curved timber walls and ceilings.

The modular systems within our products enable you to overcome any challenge when you want to push the boundaries of design. We’re specialists at helping you turn your vision into a tangible timber feature wall or curved timber ceiling specification.

Introducing Our Timber Options

Sculptform’s Click-on Battens are available in a considered selection of timber species and coatings designed to complement curved wall, ceiling and façade designs. Spotted Gum is available for both interior and exterior applications, while American Oak and Grandis are suited to interior use, each offered in a curated range of coatings to achieve the desired tone, warmth and finish.

All timber species can be curved using kerfing, where precise cuts are introduced to allow the timber to flex and achieve controlled, accurate bends. For projects requiring a more consistent radius and smoother curved form, American Oak can also be steam-bent. This method is exclusive to American Oak and supports refined curved applications. This capability extends to exterior façade applications, as seen on projects such as the Arkadia

Meticulous Joins for a Flawless Finish

Our patented Click-on Batten system provides uninterrupted textures for any wall or ceiling. Each piece of curved timber seamlessly connects to the next using an end-matching system to create a smooth wall-to-ceiling transition.

Timber tonal variation is an aspect you can enjoy with curved ceilings, curved timber screen walls and curved wood panels, adding texture and further interest to an already impressive design choice.

Curved Timber Screen

If you are after a curved timber wall that also provides some visibility, our Click-on Screens will do the job perfectly. We steam-bend the pieces of timber batten and secure them to our tracks with a unique button connection.

Curved timber screens can also seamlessly connect with a curved timber ceiling. Adding a curved concept to a screen design elevates the effect it has within an interior, drawing the eye upwards and creating intrigue.

Precise Curves Every Time

Once pieces of timber are steam bent in the Sculptform factory, they stay that way. Longevity is promised and a flawless finish is delivered. Curving timber is one of our crafts and our state-of-the-art steam bending machinery can create multitudes of curved timber at precise degrees of curvature.

Design Possibilities with Curved Timber

Concave and Convex Curves

Sculptform’s Click-on Batten system supports both inward and outward curvature, allowing designers to create concave and convex timber walls and ceilings with consistent alignment and clean detailing. Inward curves can be used to soften enclosed spaces or guide movement, while outward curves add presence and sculptural definition to feature walls and ceilings. The system is engineered to maintain even spacing and smooth transitions across radii, ensuring curved timber walls and ceilings read as intentional architectural elements rather than segmented components.

Undulating and Serpentine Forms

For more complex geometries, such as undulating or serpentine walls and ceilings, the structure behind the battens becomes critical. These applications rely on carefully formed substrates that are stress-tested to ensure the battens remain securely clipped under changing loads and curvature. In these scenarios, projects are more commonly detailed using direct-fix clips rather than tracks to provide additional holding strength and precision.

This approach is demonstrated in the Sofitel Wentworth Hotel project, where a parametric curved timber canopy required precise engineering to achieve flowing, three-dimensional forms at scale. By validating the formwork and fixing strategy early, Sculptform ensures complex curved timber ceilings and walls perform as intended while retaining their visual impact.

Integrated Lighting and Services

Curved timber ceilings can also accommodate integrated lighting and building services without interrupting the rhythm of the battens. Lighting tracks, cabling and other services can be concealed between battens, maintaining a clean, uninterrupted timber surface while meeting functional requirements. Sculptform works closely with project teams to coordinate these details, ensuring lighting aligns with the curvature and spacing of the system. Learn more about detailing integrated lighting within curved timber ceilings and how it can be incorporated into the overall design.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there limitations on which timber species can be used for curved applications?
No. There are no limitations on the use of timber species in curved applications. The Click-On Batten system is built to handle curvature first, which means timber choice is not dictated by the curve. Designers still select species based on appearance, performance and where the system is being used. The curving process works around that, not the other way around.
Can curved timber be used for exterior applications?
Yes, curved timber can be used for exterior applications. Exterior use brings different demands around exposure and durability, so timber species and coatings need to be chosen accordingly. Once that’s resolved, curved applications are entirely achievable outdoors.
How much will installation cost?
Size, profile, spacing, finish and how tight or complex the curve is will all influence installation time and cost. It’s best assessed once the design intent and detailing are in place.
Does the curve affect the acoustic performance of the timber wall?
No. The curve itself does not affect the acoustic performance of the timber wall. Acoustic performance depends on what sits behind the battens. Most projects include acoustic backing as part of the build-up, and when that is in place, curved timber walls and ceilings perform in line with flat applications.
