Design Intent

The architect’s vision was to create appealing timber boxes for each of the courtrooms, to create a positive environment for those occupying them. Using natural materials, such as timber battens, is one of the most popular and simplest ways to increase biophilic benefits, such as decreased stress, enhanced productivity and general wellbeing.

Strobe Effect

While in the install stage of the project it was noticed that the many narrow vertical battens along the walls created a strobe effect when video streaming and also when certain people tried focusing on a person with the battens behind them. This problem was rectified by placing a larger gap between the battens. The architect also wanted no joins between battens, they all needed to be exact lengths to ensure no visual distractions.

Concealed Doors

Click-on Battens were used to conceal the mediation rooms, helping to seamlessly integrate them into their surroundings. The batten screens also offer privacy for tense situations, while allowing some visibility outside the room. When folded back, a large window is revealed into the rooms, becoming a contemporary feature.

Profile Choices

A flute profile was the shape of choice for the redevelopment, with it applied to ceilings and most walls. This was complemented with a block profile applied to walls as a contrasting pattern. Stone walls are also a complementary stand-out feature of the design, with white mortar helping to exacerbate the textures of the stone.

Acoustically Sound

An acoustic design specialist was involved in the design and recommended a fine felt to be placed behind our standard acoustic backing board and the ply walls. Even the direction of the ply on the carpet needed to be facing the exact right direction – adding to the sound quality in the courtrooms.
