Pixelated Timber Ceiling
Mayvn Café, Pentonville Rd, London
A café should feel considered from the moment you walk in. At Mayvn café, the brief was to create a feature that would anchor the space and elevate the everyday experience of grabbing a coffee or meeting a colleague.
The vision from Peldon Rose was ambitious. The geometry was complex, the outcome needed to feel effortless, and the detailing had to be exact. Through early collaboration, we worked together to translate the concept into a fully resolved, buildable ceiling using our Click-on Screens system and Design-to-Reality approach.

A Pixelated Ceiling That Brings Form and Flow
The Pixelated Ceiling is formed from 40x40mm round European Oak dowels, each varied in length to create a pixelated wave across the space. From a distance the effect reads as fluid and sculptural. Up close, the logic becomes clear, a disciplined grid of repeated components working together to create the overall form. Some dowels extend downward toward the floor below, creating a subtle vertical connection that reinforces the space’s depth and sculptural presence.
In a café setting, the effect is immediate. The ceiling draws the eye upward, softens the atmosphere and gives the space a distinct architectural identity. It adds character, improves spatial perception and creates a focal point of the café
Translating Design Intent into Buildable Detail
Peldon Rose approached us with a clear design direction already established. Through our DTR process, our preconstruction team worked alongside the architect to rationalise a solution and resolve key technical elements early.
Key outcomes included:
-
Rationalising dowel lengths to create the pixelated form while simplifying manufacturing
-
Refining density and spacing across the ceiling grid to fit within project budgets
-
Integrating the mounting detail onto plyform for accurate installation
This early collaboration allowed the design intent to remain intact while the detailing was resolved before reaching site. Installed by Woodbase, the transition from documentation to construction was smooth, with the finished ceiling delivering the sculptural intent originally set out in concept.
