Species and Coatings

Please note - Timber is a natural material and colour variations are inevitable. We’ve prepared an article to help you understand how it all works - you can read it here.

For help choosing the right timber coating for your application, read our detailed guide here.  To find out more about our new Rubio coating, read our blog here.

Colours are reproduced as accurately as possible, we recommend that you request product samples before final selection. Whilst our products are produced as consistently as possible, each species has their own natural variations of colour, features and characteristics. Product samples may or may not fully reflect the colour variation that will occur on the project.

Example Screen Specification

Use the following table as a guide when creating your specification for Sculptform Free Standing Screens. The details on this page will guide you through the range of species, coatings and profile sizes we have available.

Product Name Sculptform Free Standing Screen
Material Timber
Species Spotted Gum
Batten Coating Clear Poly
Batten Size (s) / Profile 42x88mm Block
Sequence NA
Spacing between battens 50mm
Mounting Track Colour Black
Mounting Tracks
Our top track and bottom track are designed specifically for use with timber battens. There are two track width options, to suit the depth of the battens used. For battens over 100mm deep, the 100x6mm track is reccomended. For battens under 100mm deep, the 50x6mm track provides a neater finish.

Base Track

Size options: 100mm x 6mm or 50mm x 6mm to suit batten depth

Tenon Size: 26mm long x 14mm wide

Material: Aluminium

Colour: Black powder coat as standard, can be powder coated to suit requirements at extra cost.

Shadow gap: 10mm

Top Track

Size options: 100mm x 6mm or 50mm x 6mm to suit batten depth

Tenon Size: 35mm long x 14mm wide

Material: Aluminium

Colour: Black powder coat as standard, can be powder coated to suit requirements at extra cost.

Shadow gap: 20mm

Spans

As a natural material, timber expands and contracts due to moisture levels in its environment. Screening applications are particularly vulnerable to movement, with the small number of fixings holding the timber in place.

In order to account for the inevitable movement of timber, we recommend the following maximum spans between fixings for interior timber screens to keep the batten straight. Greater spans can be achieved to meet project-specific requirements, contact us to discuss with one of our project consultants.

When calculating the required fixings for a screen, the top and bottom tracks, along with the mid-support rod (see below) are suitable fixings.

Spans between fixings
Species Timber Batten Size
32x60mm 32x88mm 32x138mm 42x60mm 42x88mm 42x138mm
Blackbutt 1.5m 1.5m N/A 1.5m 1.5m N/A
Burnt Pine 1.5m 1.5m 3.0m N/A N/A N/A
Spotted Gum 1.5m 1.5m N/A 1.5m 1.5m N/A
Vic Ash 3.0m 3.0m 3.0m 3.0m 3.0m 3.0m
White Oak 1.5m 1.5m  N/A 1.5m 1.5m N/A

Mid-support Rod System

For applications which require a large distance between fixings, a threaded rod and spacers can be used as an extra fixing point. The rod runs through pre-drilled holes and uses spacer sleeves to help prevent movement and keep the battens straight. This extra fixing is provided by Sculptform and included in all pricing for screens.

When calculating the span between fixings with the tables above, please note the rod is included as a fixing.

Sculptform Free Standing Screens

Minimum / Maximum Spacing

As our Free Standing Timber Screens come with tenons pre-fixed to the top and bottom mounting tracks, spacing must be determined before they are manufactured. The minimum spacing possible between the battensis 25mm, and there is no maximum spacing requirement.

Suitable Applications

Our timber free standing screen system is available for interior applications only. For exterior applications, our aluminium screens offer a timber-look alternative. Contact us here to discuss the requirements of your project.

Batten Lengths

Each species of timber has a maximum length available, as the particular tree only grows to a certain size. These lengths set the maximum height achievable with a timber screen. For applications requiring longer lengths, our aluminium range is a better option, with up to 6m lengths available.

Species Maximum Lengths
Blackbutt 3.6m
Burnt Pine 4.2m
Spotted Gum 3.6m
Vic Ash 4.2m
White Oak 3.6m
Batten Weights
Species Density
Blackbutt 880kg/m³
Burnt Pine 430kg/m3
Spotted Gum 990kg/m³
Vic Ash 660kg/m³
White Oak 755kg/m³

Combustibility

Timber is deemed combustible under AS 1530.1-1994.

If your project requires a non-combustible material please refer to our aluminium range.

BAL Rating

Each timber species achieves different BAL ratings according to AS 3959-2009 as outlined below –

Maintenance

Interior timber typically does not require maintenance. It is important to regularly check timber which is exposed to UV radiation through windows etc, as this can lead to yellowing of the coating. Re-coating may be required.
