Timber Battens at London Luton Airport

London Luton Airport’s Redevelopment

One of the largest airports in the UK recently underwent significant upgrades to enhance its passenger experience and modernise its facilities.

The mezzanine level at London Luton Airport, designed by Rock Townsend, to offer a seamless blend of aesthetic appeal and functional efficiency. Timber Click-on Battens were chosen for their natural warmth and ability to create a contemporary atmosphere, aligning with the airport’s goal of improving the passenger experience.

Form Meets Function with Custom Batten Design

One of the standout features of this project was the introduction of a new custom batten profile with a chamfered edge. This design element was not only a visual choice but also a technical solution. The chamfered edge was engineered to allow clear airflow around the grill on the mezzanine, a crucial aspect for maintaining proper ventilation in such a busy environment. This streamlined shape ensured that the airflow was unobstructed while maintaining the sleek, modern aesthetic that the architects desired around the curve of the mezzanine.

The custom batten design reflects a deep collaboration between Sculptform and the project’s architects, highlighting the importance of innovative solutions in modern architecture. The chamfered battens seamlessly integrate with the block profiled battens to provide form and function.

Collaboration and Detailing

During the project’s planning phase, Sculptform was approached by Ryebridge Construction, who was impressed with our Click-on Batten system and the pre-indexed clips installation element, which ensures efficient and accurate placement of the battens. Ryebridge recognised the value this added to the construction process, facilitating discussions between Sculptform and the Rock Townsend team to work on a plan for how to best integrate these elements into the project’s detailed drawings.

This collaborative approach ensured that all stakeholders were aligned, allowing the custom batten design and installation methodology to be seamlessly incorporated into the architectural plans. The result was a refined design that met both aesthetic and functional requirements while streamlining the installation process on site.
