A learning environment

Hosting over 1400 students per week, the centre is dedicated to researching and teaching students about the natural environment. Three immersive habitat classrooms within the institute showcase the Rainforest, Desert and Woodlands in a way that encourages exploration and allows the students to interact with native animals in a controlled environment.

A Sustainable Vision

The Taronga Zoo Institute of Science and Learning is a Green Star Design & As Built, 6 Star Certified Building. Key initiatives such as the use of renewable materials, recycled water and design choices to minimise the energy footprint of the building drove the sustainable vision of the project, which achieved the highest possible Green Star rating. The Blackbutt timber Click-on Battens contributed to this rating by using sustainable timber – Certified by PEFC.

Utilising Australian Timber

Our Click-on Batten system is used on the facade and interior walls, utilising a sequence of battens in various depths. All the battens are Australian Blackbutt timber, which is known for its hardy nature and beautiful grain patterns. Clear oil coating is used for both the interior and exterior areas, providing a consistent finish over all the timber feature walls.
